Biography
dr. David B. Nieborg graduated cum laude at Utrecht University on the interaction between popular culture and the U.S. Army, using the PC First Person Shooter game America’s Army as a case study. His MA-thesis “Changing the Rules of Engagement – Tapping into the Popular Culture of America’s Army, the Official U.S. Army Computer Game” was awarded a finalist position at the ‘2005 Dutch National Thesis Trophy’.
Nieborg published on his work on games, the military entertainment complex and online participatory culture in peer reviewed journals such New Media and Society, the European Journal of Cultural Studies, Fibreculture Journal, and het Tijdschrift voor Mediageschiedenis, as well as in various book chapters and conference proceedings – both national and international.
Current research
Today, David is affiliated as a PhD-student with the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), a research institute dedicated to the interdisciplinary study and analysis of contemporary culture. His PhD discusses the political economy of the game industry. He is supervised by prof.dr. José van Dijck (UvA) and prof.dr. William Uricchio (UU/MIT). In the fall of 2008 David was a visiting scholar at MIT’s GAMBIT game lab.
Teaching
Starting in 2002 as a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University, he became a lecturer at Utrecht University teaching in such areas as media theory, film studies, communication studies, and new media and digital culture. Since August 2005, David is a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Humanities, department of Media and Culture studies. In Amsterdam he coordinates courses, supervises BA and MA theses, and teaches seminars and lectures on new media and digital culture, participatory culture, new media tools, and game studies. David also gave guest lectures at MIT, Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Hogeschool InHolland, and Utrecht University.

David is a regular interviewee for numerous newspapers (Het Financieele Dagblad, Algemeen Dagblad, Parool, Volkskrant, NRC, nrc.next, DAG, Spits, GPD Dagbladen), magazines (Elsevier, Havana, Nieuwe Revu, Management Team, Intermediair, VPRO Gids, Adforesult, Observant, HCC Link, Spotlight Effect, Folia, Ublad, Brunel Magazine), TV shows and documentaries (EenVandaag, VPRO Tegenlicht, Al-Jazeera English, De Wereld Draait Door, NOS journaal, RTL journaal) and radio shows (BBC Radio, Radio 1 Journaal, NRCR Lunch, TROS Online, BNN United, L1, BNR Nieuwsradio, Lijn 5).
Projects
As a journalist Nieborg writes for various Dutch magazines, blogs and national papers, mostly on new media and games. David started his newspaper adventure at the leading national newspaper NRC and wrote more than 80 feature articles for the daily Dutch newspaper Dagblad de Pers. He was a regular contributor to GMR, a leading Dutch game magazine, and contributed to Folia, Planet Multimedia, Ownage.nl, FoliaNostra.nl, and De Nieuwe Reporter.nl. Today he is Editor-in-Chief at Bashers.nl, a groupblog on games by Dutch game journalists. David is an expert at Netkwesties and an editor of Pakhuis de Zwijger’s GameLab.
Consultancy
Late 2006 David founded Innovation Vineyard, or I-vineyard.com, a creative platform for new media research, consultancy, writing, and policy advice. Nieborg consulted (inter)national firms (in various industries) on the implications of social networks, virtual worlds and games. Clients include Submarine, Aegon, Ministerie van Veiligheid & Justitie, RIVM, Het Instituut/UMC and several NGO’s and universities.
Talks
Apart from being a university lecturer, David gave numerous talks at universities (Spui 25, Studium Generale Universiteit Utrecht; Universiteit van Maastricht, Hogeschool van Utrecht, Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, Twente University, Harvard/MIT), cultural events (Mediamatic, Impakt Festival, Club of Amsterdam, Stifo@Sandberg, Upload Cinema), museums (Nest), symposia and conferences (CSNconference, Generation Next, Marketeer Congres, De Toekomst van DM, PICNIC, Marketingdag voor de podiumkunsten, Landelijk Psychologie Symposium, Netherlands American Studies Association, Media van Morgen, BLIK, Forum MC) and participated in workshops (at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, TNO, Koninklijke Militaire Academie).
